Shuttle Service on the Palmetto Trail

April 29, 2009 by tsliker

I'm getting ready to embark on a 3-day walk on the Foothills Trail, an 80-mile trail that meanders along the northwest corner of South Carolina, along the borders with North Carolina and Georgia.  I am walking alone, so I needed to find a shuttle so I could avoid having to walk in a circle.  I will be walking from Whitewater Falls westward to the Chatooga River and Oconee State Park.

The Foothills Trail web site has a page that lists shuttle drivers willing to service backpackers.  I contacted about seven of the individuals via email (about three weeks prior to my trip) and received responses from three.   These individuals are volunteers and will not give you a price for their service (for insurance reasons), but I am told that the going rate for a donation is $.50 per mile.  For my driver, it is a 40-50 mile drive round trip from her house, so I plan to give her $30 which seems very reasonable to me.

UPDATE:  I gave my shuttle driver $40.  She was so nice and I was really grateful that she inconvenienced herself to be available for me at just the time and place I wanted.
